Education

We offer a unique learning experience in traditional African and Caribbean dance, accompanied by live traditional drumming. Our dance workshops provide an opportunity to learn dances from ethnic groups across the entire African continent and the Caribbean islands. Each dance routine tells a story, and we relish the opportunity to educate our students in the aspects of African and Caribbean life represented in the dances taught. Semekor Performing Arts offers exciting dynamic educational workshops which create awareness and further understanding of African and Caribbean performing arts and culture. There are also opportunities for students to use what is learnt to improvise and create original African dance-based choreography.

We offer traditional dance styles from South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Botswana, Senegal, and more. We also offer more contemporary dance styles such as Afro-beat, Afro-street jazz, Hip-Life, and Afro-contemporary.

Level: Adults and children of all abilities

Duration: Negotiable

Fee: Dependent upon activities, duration, and number of participants

We also offer tuition in a range of West African percussion including Djembe and Djun Djun, Kpanlogo and Talking drums. Drums will be provided by Semekor Performing Arts unless the student prefers to use his/her own instrument.

Residencies

Semekor Performing Arts holds residencies in primary and secondary schools, as well as in colleges of further and higher education. Residencies are project oriented over an extended period of time sometimes culminating in a performance or informal sharing with other participants, teachers and parents.  These are planned and designed according to the needs of the group. At the end of a residency the participants are expected to be able to demonstrate to a certain degree of what they have learned during the residency.

All our teachers are experienced in working sensitively and confidently with members from diverse groups: children, young people, adults, and people with disabilities.
